Truma wins award: Safety for gas in camping vehicles
In Putzbrunn just outside Munich lies Truma, well known for its air heaters most campers for several generations know. But Truma has much more in stock than hot camping vehicles, says a smiling Jutta Bringazi as BoCM takes a small tour of the factory on a great summer day. This time, increased gas safety applies.
The Truma factories are impressive in size and design. The name is actually taken from US President Harry Trumann, and the business grew in what is referred to as the German business wonder after World War II. Truma still produces all parts themselves, and is not just a place where parts are screwed together. There is a dedicated creativity department here, and over the years there have been many strange inventions. But the new Truma gas protection system is so simple that it is strange that no one has thought of it before. But now it is here.
Secure gas plant
Since "time of the morning", gas has been used in camping vehicles for heating, hot water and cooking. As with most things, gas plant faults also occur. Gas on the go is somewhat rancid, not to mention fatal in given situations. For decades, Truma has developed and manufactured gas-powered equipment such as heaters and hot water systems. Now they will develop and produce all the main components of the gas plants themselves, such as cranes, regulators, hoses and filters. "We do this to make sure that all components are of the same high quality," says Jutta Bringazi.
In a normal gas system, if a hose breaks, or a leak occurs, the gas flows out until the bottle is empty. It can have - and has had - catastrophic consequences if it happens at night while campers sleep. During transport and driving the gas cranes should be closed, but this is probably a rule many of us sin against, because it is so nice to have heat in the car or caravan when you park for the night. With the new safety valve from Truma, this danger is eliminated. If a leak occurs, a special ball valve will turn in and shut off the gas completely. The crash sensor also ensures that in the event of heavy impact above 35G, (G = 1 "gravity"), the gas will automatically shut off, even if no leakage has occurred. Thus, the sleeping and traveling campers can safely have the heat on, whether they are sleeping or on the way.
Easier bottle change
The new safety valve also makes bottle changing much easier. Who hasn't had to go out in the rain and cold to change from an empty to a full bottle, at the most unfavorable time. The new safety valve can have two bottles connected, and when the first one goes empty, the valve itself automatically skips over to the full one. "When the empty bottle is then changed at a convenient time, the safety valve automatically switches back to it, if you do not choose to change the valve itself," says Jutta. The safety valve can also be used where there is only one gas bottle, but then you have to replace the bottle as before when it runs out. A new EU regulation has introduced requirements for gas plants to have this type of safety equipment, but this does not yet apply in Norway.
Check the gas hoses
A gas hose becomes brittle and eventually dark, and MUST be changed after a certain number of years. This is written in capital letters and numbers on the snake itself, and on a small plate that usually sits at one end. Usually, the service life is set to 10 years, and both the production date and the exchange date must be stated on the hose. This is also something many sins against, but NBCC carries out free checks every year, and strongly encourages the replacement of gas hoses that have crackles, small cracks, or are "out of date".
New gas filter
In conjunction with the new safety valve, Truma has also developed a new filter that ensures that pipes and nozzles do not get clogged with impurities in the gas. The filter is a small "cushion" that rests against a pipe and which the gas must pass through. Changing the filter is so easy that even - yes, dad - can do it with a simple handle, Jutta grins and shows how it is done. The entire package of filters (for each bottle) selector valve and safety valve with crash sensor, is built so compact that it can fit even in relatively narrow gas boxes.
The Innovation Prize TOP 100
For the fourth time, Truma is among the 100 most innovative medium-sized companies in Germany. On June 28, 2019, the family company was honored with the TOP 100 seal. The Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien (Vienna Business School) assessed approx. 400 companies from all over Germany. First and foremost, Truma convinced the jury with its innovation environment and its innovation-promoting leadership. "We give our teams a lot of room for ideas and creativity. The open and flexible office concept contributes to this. In our" garage "our team works together with a focus on new products and solutions and trying out what they come up with. often the customer in the early stages, "says general manager Alexander Wottrich in a press release.
