Svartisen - Norway's second largest glacier

Svartisen covers an area of about 370 square kilometers, and is Norway's second largest glacier. In the middle of the 1700 century, Svartisen was a continuous glacier, today it is divided into an east and a western part.

The Svartisen is low in the terrain - just 20 mh at the lowest, which makes Svartisen a very accessible tourist destination. This also makes it very popular. The first tourist ships called at the Holandsfjord already about 1860.

The name "Svartisen" comes from the word "black ice". This is an old word that denotes the special deep blue color that parts of the black ice have.

Brestua is located by the water that Svartisen opens into and overlooks the glacier. Here you can buy food and drinks as well as souvenirs.

The Svartisen is in constant motion. There is therefore a danger of staying under ice sections or at the forefront of the glacier.
