Skudeneshavn - the beautiful sailing ship town

Skudeneshavn is a charming and beautiful sailing ship town located on Skudeneset on the southern tip of the island Karmøy in Rogaland.

Skudeneshavn grew at the end of the Middle Ages, and the small community grew strongly in the 1800th century. Lobster and herring fishing as well as exports of herring meant that Skudeneshavn grew strongly in the 1800th century. The fleet of sailing ships that sailed abroad was relatively large, but from about 1880 there was a transition from sailing to steam, and this together with failing fishing meant that there was significantly less activity in Skudeneshavn. This also led to a significant emigration, especially to America, in the years that followed. Skudeneshavn currently has a modern shipbuilding industry and one of the country's largest offshore shipping companies. Today, Skudeneshavn is probably best known for its very well-preserved wooden houses, and this is one of them Rogalands most visited tourist destination. In 2004, Skudeneshavn was named Norway's Summer City by NRK's Summer Open.
