Beautiful and magical trip to Sandøya Tromsø
Fancy a tour experience out of the ordinary? Then we recommend a trip to Meal Vika on Sandøya. The island is located west of Rebbenesøy little outside Tromsø.
Mjølvik - or "Melvika" that all the areas here says - located on the east side of Sandøya. This is a large bay with buildings on the west and south, and like many other places in this area also have this eye beautiful sandy beaches.
On the south side of the island is Kirkevær - a fishing village with a bell tower and the remains of a medieval church. Kirkevær existed from 1300's until 1600's and lived off the manufacture and export of dried fish.
How do you get to Sandøya?
From Tromsø you can run over to the Whale Island and northward in the direction Skul Fjord. This is a walk of about 30 min. Just before going to Skul Fjord find Bellvik quay. From here there are ferry a few days a week. There are only a few departures which go out to Sandøya (Mjølvik), link to the timetable can be found under useful links.
On board ferry, you will see the small idyllic site Skulsfjord right across the fjord with its approximately 100 residents. Skulsfjord is a popular place for those who want to stroll along the shore and enjoy the tranquility and beautiful scenery. If you have been on your side you will be able to see the characteristic mountain "Store Blåmann" rough on the opposite side of the fjord. Should it tempt a top trip to Big Blåmann you can read more about it on ut.no. Further on the way to Sandøya is ferries through Vengsøy, Laukvik, Musvær and Risøy.
Another beautiful small island you can see on this trip are Gåsvær. This is currently uninhabited, but there are still a few houses out here and Gåsvær chapel 1941. It was built by Gåsvær church association, which was founded in 1931. Gåsvær is a historically important island when many generations of relatives buried here.
Every year, church association Gåsværhelga with worship in the chapel around 20. July.
A trip out to Sandøya is not only a great experience for those who wish to spend a few days out on the island, but it's also a really great trip for those who want to make this an afternoon. The trip takes about 3,5 hour before you're back on Bellvik quay.
