Alta - Beautiful scenery, northern lights and midnight sun
Alta is the town in Finnmark that has become very famous for its petroglyphs. The large concentration of rock art that you find in Alta has provided an entry on UNESCO's World Heritage List. It is estimated that some of these carvings can be 7000 years old, and was conducted by the hunter and trappers. Right at Alta Museum is a petroglyph site that is great accessible to the public.
Northern Lights Cathedral
The Northern Lights Cathedral was consecrated on 10 February 2013, and has been designated by the website theculturetrip.com as one of the ten most exciting new buildings in Norway in recent years.
Finnmarksløpet was first held in 1981, the time with only three buckets at the starting line. In 2013 stood throughout 129 pail from 13 different nations at the starting line.
Alta has arranged Finnmarksløpet every year since its inception, and has received international attention because of it.
Alta is surrounded by large deposits of shale, which is world renowned for its hardness. It is gray in color and becomes almost black by polishing. Much of the older buildings in Alta slate thatched. Slate is today taken out at 4 different quarries in Alta.
Alta fjord Kåfjord is also very famous for trying to lower the German battleship "Tirpitz". "Operation Source" managed to damage the ship that eventually had to leave the bay. Then went the ship on to Tromso where the outside Håkøya the 12. November 1944 was lowered.
