Year-round camping in Surnadal: Surnadal Camping Brekkøya opened by mayor

Thursday 18 August this year was a great day for Firdauce and Gerald Grewe. Mayor Margrethe Svindvik and municipal director Knut Haugen then opened Surnadal's first year-round campsite with an emptying station for motorhomes.

Already before the start, Surnadal has gained an international touch. Firdauce comes from Mauritius, Gerald comes from Germany. They also have their daughter Sofie with them, and together they bought the place in 2017. "Since then, we have made a good name for ourselves, among other things. with our food that we serve in the restaurant here on Brekkøya, open all year round. Here you get really good, home-cooked food with both a German, Norwegian and international background. We are very proud of the food we serve, everything is made from scratch here in the house. We attach great importance to short-traveled fresh ingredients," says Gerald.

Gem of a place

"When we came to Surnadal, we decided to develop this gem of a place, with a wider offer for holidaying guests, motorhomes and children. We aim to make Brekkøya a pleasure for everyone, young or old, hungry or thirsty, fishermen or tourists, everyone should feel welcome and in the right place, regardless of whether they come with a motorhome, caravan, tent or rent a cabin from us. Surnadal has everything to offer you could wish for, and this within walking distance," says Gerald. The center of Surnadal is a short walk away, approximately 400 metres, and has, among other things, Shop open on Sundays, liquor store, cinema, ALTI centre, shopping opportunities and much more.

"Comfort places"

To make the space year-round, 10 asphalted so-called "comfort spaces" have been built. They are all 10 meters long, and can accommodate all cars and wagons. Each space has electricity, water and drainage, which makes long-term stays possible. In addition, the site boasts 12 newly built cabins with two rooms, a kitchen and adapted for HC. The pitch has 72 year-round pitches with their own electricity meter, 46 drop-in pitches with electricity, and 18 tent pitches without electricity. Right next to the playground, five places have been created specially adapted for families with children. Two newly renovated sanitary facilities with 8 toilets, showers and 2 kitchens are also available to guests. So are washing machines and tumble dryers. "For the children, we have created a new playground with a zip-line, jumping pillow, climbing wall, swings and sandboxes", says Gerald, who adds that they also have a restaurant with a la carte, take away and catering on the site.

Service station

The great pride is a hypermodern, fully automatic service station. It can accept motorhomes and caravans regardless of size or system, for emptying gray water, toilet cassettes and emptying the integrated tanks that the motorhomes use. On site is also a large rubbish container, taps for filling fresh water and hand washing.

Municipal support

All municipalities are required to offer a sanitary emptying station for camping tourists. The municipality has therefore supported the project with NOK 120.000, while the drivers themselves have financed a further NOK one million. "We've been following this process, and it's fun to see that it turned out so well," said mayor Margrethe Svinvik when she cut the cord and declared the new year-round site open. During the presentation of the service station, it was said that "this must be Norway's finest emptying station". And the youngest in the Grewe family, 8-year-old Sofia had the honor of handing over the bouquet of flowers and thanking the mayor for municipal benevolence.
